Project Mythos is a turn-based tactical RPG where the player must deploy units from a roster of soldiers to fight both human and divine threats. It follows themes of individuality, psychology and social issues. The game takes place in a gritty mythology-based sci-fi setting and centres around a war amongst nations after their gods have died.

In each battle, the player will switch between Map Mode and Combat Mode. Map Mode allows the player to issue special commands, view their strategic position, and choose units to move or deploy. Once a Unit is chosen to move, the player will enter Combat Mode. Here, the player enters a third person view of the unit and can control where they move to in the environment, which enemy they shoot, and carry out any other necessary actions. During Combat Mode, only the controlled unit can move, however enemy units can still fire.

Mythos also features a Quirk System, in which each unit has a number of quirks which can trigger responses like stat increases or decreases in specific conditions. For example, a unit who grew up in the city may have the “City Kid” quirk which boosts their speed in a City Environment. This makes narrative sense for their character because they may feel more comfortable navigating this environment due to their upbringing.

The Despair System also supplements the themes of individuality and psychology by having units react psychologically to events happening around them. Each unit has a Despair Meter which, when at capacity, will trigger the unit to have a Mental Breakdown. Breakdowns can make the unit rampage (having the player lose control of them), retreat (leave the battle), or even overcome it (increasing their stats). Despair Meters are filled by actions such as watching another character die, get dismembered, or being around characters with negative Quirks (such as a female character being around a misogynist).

Every character has permadeath (unless they're required by plot) leaning into the grittiness of the game. The enemy can resurrect the bodies of the fallen with their Divine powers, turning them into Husks which will fight against the player in another battle. Troops can also be victim to dismemberment and, if rescued, will be decommissioned from the squad. The player can purchase cybernetic enhancements to make them combat-ready again and give them a slight boost in stats via a trait.
